Things have been busy. I have been slowly working on this dress for Juliana. I was inspired by this version of the Oliver + S birthday party dress. Juliana and Felicity are both going to be flower girls in a couple of weddings this summer. I loved the simplicity of the dress match the silk dupioni. I wanted to make the dress up in a cheaper material first though to do a run through before messing up the lovely (expensive!) silk.
The pattern itself isn't difficult. I just wasn't inspired when making it though. I was just dragging my feet over this for some reason. I hate having to trace out patterns. I think that is one of the reasons why I don't like making clothing sometimes. I like to keep patterns in tact, especially the kid ones so I can use the different sizes. I find it such a pain tracing them though. Anyone have any good tips on streamlining this process?
The dress is so cute though! I love it. I like it with the little tie over the button tab. I think it adds that touch of girly. I made a little bolero jacket to go over it as well that I didn't get a picture of.
One of these buttonholes caused me a big headache. It kept getting stuck in one spot. I finally got it done after an hour or so of ripping it out. Pooh.
Juliana saw a picture of a flower girl on the cover of one of the patterns I was considering. People keep telling her she is going to be a flower girl, but I don't think she got it until she saw the picture. It was instantaneous love. She says she wants stars in her hair and a bucket with flowers. This was her version of a flower girl that she came up with all on her own. (She couldn't find a white bucket...only orange.)
Your little girl is so cute, she looks very proud of her new dress. Great job!
ReplyDeleteBoth she and the dress are absolutely adorable!
ReplyDeleteThat is such a sweet dress, I love the color and the pleats!
ReplyDeleteSo darling, Meg! I love the pattern and the color! I can't wait to see the more formal versions too! I am right there with you on pattern tracing- I bought a bolt of the lined pattern paper from Joann's and use colored markers and dive in after the little ones are in bed.
ReplyDeleteLovely work... I trace my patterns on to oak tag (cardboard stock in some cases) it makes the pieces much easier to handle and trace, especially when using them again and again. I've heard of people using spray mount also.
ReplyDeleteThis is such a perfect dress! Yellow is a great look on her!
ReplyDeleteThis is SO CUTE!
ReplyDeleteShe looks adorable! The dress is beautiful! Those buttons look great! Good work! Yellow IS a good color on her!
ReplyDeleteI could die. That is just absolutely adorable! Great polka dot fabric choice, so cheerful and cute!!!
ReplyDeleteso cute! my pattern is in the mail coming soon (i hope!) the patterns are so expensive - i don't think i could NOT trace them and make them in every size!
ReplyDeletei use patternese or easy pattern - something like that from joanns. i think it's $1.99/yd reg price. it's like interfacing. i like it because i can fold it back up and stick it in an envelope. initially, i hated tracing and cutting, but have now found it relaxing. i do it in my front room after the kids are in bed and watch t.v. it IS a pain, but maybe it's more of change in attitude that has helped me.
What a sweet dress! I've only made one Oliver+S pattern and loved it...now after seeing your yellow dress I want this pattern too. :)
ReplyDeleteI hate tracing patterns too - but I don't like to cut up kids patterns becasue I want to use all the sizes. I photocopy all the pieces and then cut out each size. Kids patterns are small enought that you can most of them on a A4 (or 2 A4) pieces of paper so it's not too fiddly.
